Luka Modric took to social media to thank Liverpool fans for their support following Los Blancos' 5-2 victory at Anfield.

Carlo Ancelotti's side came back from a two goal deficit to all but seal progression into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night.

Vinicius Jr's brace nullified Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah's early goals, opening the floodgates for a Real Madrid onslaught.

Eder Militao's bullet header, followed by a double from Karim Benzema ensured they head to the Bernabeu in full control.

But at the epicentre of it all was the timeless Luka Modric, who continued to defy logic as he edges ever closer to his forties.

The Croatian was influential in his side's fifth goal, intercepting a pass before effortlessly gliding past two players and releasing Vinicius, who played in Benzema to score his second of the evening.

The Ballon d'Or winner was withdrawn on the 87th minute where he was awarded a standing ovation by the Liverpool supporters.

Despite the end result, Reds fans knew they were witnessing greatness. Meanwhile, the away end chanted their magician's name as he departed the field.

Modric sends message to Liverpool fans

Modric has since taken to social media to thank Liverpool fans for their gracious support.

He tweeted: "Thank you Anfield. Special atmosphere. #Respect" accompanied by a handshake and clapping emoji.

And it seems the 37-year-old isn't finished yet, with Ancelotti ready to offer him a new deal on the back of Tuesday's display.

Ahead of kick-off, Modric discussed his desire to earn a new contract and, following his performance, Ancelotti suggested he'd done it in one night, saying, "Modric has already shown he deserves a contract renewal. He’s amazing.”

“Modric had a hard time in January. He was not feeling well but now he’s back. His physical condition is great. I’m convinced you will see the best Luka again.”
