Liverpool’s first lineup under FSG shows how far they have taken the club

FSG took over the Anfield club back in 2010.

Liverpool have been owned by Fenway Sports Group since 2010 and the first starting eleven under their tenure shows exactly how far they have taken the club.

On October 15th 2010, FSG completed the takeover of the Anfield club and just two days later, Liverpool travelled to Goodison Park for a fierce Merseyside derby.

FSG owners John W Henry and Tom Werner were both in attendance as they saw their new team buckle under the pressure as Everton came out 2-0 winners thanks to goals by Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta.

That result did not come as a surprise as Liverpool were in horrid form and were lingering around the bottom of the Premier League table under the guidance of Roy Hodgson.

The starting eleven on that day was: Pepe Reina - Jamie Carragher, Martin Skrtel, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Paul Konchesky - Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva - Joe Cole, Raul Meireles, Maxi Rodriguez - Fernando Torres.

At the start of FSG’s reign, Liverpool endured some of the toughest periods in their entire history. They were nowhere near as competitive as their rivals and often finished outside the top five.

However, the Liverpool team of recent years has shown exactly the work that FSG has done as they turned a club in turmoil into one of the best teams in world football.

Hodgson was replaced by Brendan Rodgers, after a tough start to his tenure, Rodgers was the first man under the FSG ownership to get the team close to the summit of the Premier League. However, they were unable to match Manchester City in the 13/14 season.

After the departure of star men Luis Suarez and Raheem Sterling, Rodgers’ time as Reds boss came to an end.

Jurgen Klopp was appointed in October 2015, which was the start of the revival of one of the biggest clubs in world football.

The signings of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson signalled their intent to get themselves back on top of the world.

And in 2019, they managed to win the Champions League, in the season that followed, Liverpool won their first domestic title in 30 years as they clinched the club’s first-ever Premier League trophy.

Signing Klopp was arguably the best thing that FSG has done as the German's football and personality changed the whole mood of the club's fanbase.

It has been a huge transformation that was overseen by FSG, they might not be every Liverpool fan’s preferred owner but there is no doubting the work that they have done to turn this club around.

The future is looking bright for Liverpool, Anfield is being redeveloped, the academy is one of the finest in world football and the players are now training in a modern state-of-the-art training facility.

Will FSG sell the club in the near future? Only time will tell.
