Liverpool are set to miss out on a share of a potential £150 million windfall after Manchester City secured the treble, according to reports.

City completed the treble last weekend, defeating Inter Milan 1-0 in the Champions League final in Istanbul.

They became just the third English club to complete a domestic and continental treble of any kind, following on from Manchester United and Liverpool.

In recent seasons, Liverpool were the ones to challenge City in both the Premier League and in Europe - but that wasn't the case this time around.

The Reds struggled to fifth place in the league table, despite a strong run of form at the end of the season, and were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid. If they had progressed beyond Real, a semi-final clash against City would have been on the cards.

But Liverpool's poor season, by their standards, coupled with City's success, could have a major financial impact for Klopp's side.

Liverpool 'set to miss out on windfall'

According to the Daily Mirror, Liverpool will miss out on the inaugural Club World Cup in 2025 due to City winning the Champions League.

UEFA have been allotted 12 slots in the competition, with only two from each nation.

The slots include the Champions League winners from the past four seasons, with both City and 2021 winners Chelsea fitting the criteria.

Liverpool's only route into the Club World Cup would have been through winning next season's Champions League - but they won't be playing in the competition.

As a result, the Reds will miss out on a share of a major prize pot that is set to be on offer in the new competition.

It is claimed by the above report that the total prize pot is expected to be worth £150 million, although it is unclear how this would be structured between the competing teams.

Either way, the news will come as a blow to the Reds on a sporting and financial level, with the club's top stars set to miss out on a new competition that would significantly benefitting the club in terms of bringing in funds.
