Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has praised Fabio Carvalho for his performance in Liverpool's loss to the Red Devils on Monday night.

Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford gave United a 2-0 lead before Mohamed Salah pulled back an eventual consolation, which wasn't enough for the Reds as they slumped to a first Premier League defeat of 2022.

It’s the first time since 2012/13 that Liverpool have failed to win any of their opening three matches of a Premier League campaign, and it is a result which leaves them seven points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the league already.

But Carvalho was one of few shining lights for Liverpool in a very disappointing display, he helped drive the ball forward and he even played a role in Salah’s goal.

Scholes noted this, telling Optus Sport: “I thought Carvalho did well when he came on. He carried the ball, running forward. That’s what I mean about creativity in the middle of the pitch."

"Milner and Henderson – they’re too similar. When Carvalho came on he actually started running at the defence and trying to create a little bit more.”

The 19-year-old certainly changed things for the better for Liverpool, who now sit in 16th in the Premier League table.

He arrived from Fulham this summer after an impressive campaign in the Championship, where he scored ten goals and provided eight assists as they gained promotion.

The £7.7m transfer was completed with the Reds looking to refresh the age of their squad, in particular in the attacking and midfield areas.

His performance last night will likely earn him a more prominent role as Liverpool host Bournemouth on Saturday in search of their first win of the league season.

The Champions League draw also takes place this Thursday, which could again provide them with a chance to reset after a torrid beginning to the campaign.

For Carvalho though, this could be a serious opportunity to make his mark at the top level with the injuries currently hampering Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
