Liverpool have made contact with Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes, according to a fresh report.

The Reds endured a dismal trophyless season in which they failed to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.

In turn, Jurgen Klopp has been tipped to undergo major surgery on his ageing squad, with the midfield, in particular, a position that needs addressing.

The Reds have been linked with a spate of midfielders, including Brighton duo Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo, Chelsea pair Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher, Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch and Inter’s Nicolò Barella.

And the latest addition to that list is Newcastle’s prodigious star, Guimaraes.

Guimaraes to Liverpool

According to Goal, Liverpool and Barcelona have both kicked off negotiations over the signing of Guimaraes.

Yet while the two European heavyweights are both keen to add the Brazilian to their ranks in the off-season, the Magpies are determined to keep the Brazil international.

Newcastle are allegedly preparing a bumper contract to convince Guimaraes to stay at St James’ Park. Indeed, as per the report, the club are willing to make the midfielder among the top-five highest-paid players in the Premier League, to fend off interest from rivals.

That would put Guimaraes on a similar wage to the likes of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho, who both earn a reported £350,000-a-week, according to Spotrac.

Guimaraes’ representatives have allegedly warned Newcastle of the interest in their client. Yet it is believed the 25-year-old would favour a contract renewal over a transfer away, as he is happy in the North East.

Romano deems Liverpool deal “almost impossible”

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano claimed that the chances of Liverpool and Barcelona securing a deal for Guimaraes were “almost impossible”.

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast Romano said: “Newcastle want to offer a new deal to Bruno Guimaraes because they know that big clubs around Europe are tracking the player.

“It is true that Liverpool like the player, but they know a deal will be almost impossible this summer, the same with Barcelona.

“It will be very complicated to sign Bruno Guimaraes this summer.”
