Over 10,000 fans across the world were asked by Sonos about the sights and sounds of sport including which fans make the loudest noise, the best sound in sport, and pre-match rituals to celebrate their new position as the Official Sound Partner of Liverpool FC.
21% of football fans think that Liverpool FC have the loudest fans in the top 6 leagues in Europe. Whether that be just singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” at the first and final whistle or cheering the many goals that Sadio Mane scores, Anfield is definitely seen as one of the loudest atmospheres in Europe. Even archrival Sir Alex Ferguson was quick to cite Anfield when asked about the best atmosphere in England in his FAQs with Gary Neville on LADbible recently;
“Anfield. Electric. You’ve [Neville] been there, you know what it’s like.

“It’s a marvelous atmosphere. You have to expect that atmosphere even if you’re losing.”
Liverpool fans share the top spot for the loudest fans with Barcelona fans at Camp Nou. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich fans then followed with 15% of the votes each.
Sonos commissioned the research to celebrate becoming the Official Sound Partner of Liverpool FC as of last Summer, along with curating the Anfield Pre-Match Anthems station, a combination of the pre-match music of both the LFC men’s and women’s teams. The station is available on Sonos Radio (hosted by Liverpool FC and rap legend John Barnes) in the Sonos app and on Mixcloud for those away from their Sonos and everyone else.

Is there anything sweeter than the ball hitting the back of the opponent's net? According to 41% of the fans asked, the ball flying into the net is the most exciting sound in sport. However, we guess that depends on whose net the ball is hitting! Second in the list was the sound of a player kicking/heading or just touching the ball. Sometimes, just those simple sounds makes the beautiful game even better.
Now we’ve all blamed ourselves for our team’s defeat in some way. We weren't wearing the right football top or we didn’t go to the usual burger van before the game. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! When asked by Sonos, 65% of football fans have revealed that they have a pre-game ritual or superstition on a match day. The biggest superstition mentioned by fans was NOT washing their team’s top before a game for good luck. It seems that superstition still beats hygiene for the average football fan. The second biggest pre-game ritual was turning the surround sound up on the TV. If you can’t be at the game the next best thing is being able to immerse yourself in the atmosphere. With a sound system kitted out for game day, you can still feel the roar of the stadium when the ball hits the back of the net and the energy of the crowd as they sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
39% of people said that having a good time was the most important thing when watching sports with only 20% of people saying that their team winning was the key to watching sports. 9% of people said that if money was no object, they would have a burger van at their house every time they watched football. Sometimes you have to wonder, what’s wrong with 91% of people?
