Moments after he was sacked by local rivals Everton, thousands of Liverpool fans inside Anfield sang Rafael Benitez's name during their Premier League clash against Brentford.

The Toffees confirmed the departure of Benitez as first team manager on Sunday afternoon following their humiliating 2-1 defeat to struggling Norwich City.

Having won just once in the league since September, the news will come as no surprise to many as Everton currently sit six points above the relegation zone in 16th place.

In a statement on their official website, the club wrote: "Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as first team manager.

"Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the club with immediate effect.

"An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course."

Many people expected the news following Everton's poor run of form.

The Blues have lost nine of their last 12 league games, and tempers reached boiling point following Saturday's defeat to Norwich.

A large section of supporters backed the decision to sack the Spaniard on social media, while plenty of Liverpool fans voiced their support for former manager Benitez during Sunday's game against Brentford.

Here are some clips from Anfield as the Reds geared up for the second-half.

Duncan Ferguson and Leighton Baines will now take charge of the club on an interim basis, according to reports.

Thoughts on Benitez's departure? Who do you think should take over at Goodison Park?
