Liverpool still have not replaced key club figure who left in the summer

Liverpool recruited on the pitch in the summer - but failed to recruit for a key role off it.

Liverpool completed plenty of transfer business, in terms of ingoings and outgoings, this summer - but are yet to fill a crucial role off the pitch, according to reports.

Jurgen Klopp's side brought four players to the club over the summer. The highlight of those was the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica, for an initial fee of £64 million.

But it was their outgoings that were highlighted more, with Sadio Mane moving to Bayern Munich.

Long-serving players Divock Origi, Neco Williams and Loris Karius departed the club, whilst academy products Sheyi Ojo and Ben Woodburn were amongst the other players to leave on free transfers.

There were changes off the field, too. Michael Edwards - such a prominent figure under the FSG ownership - left his role as Liverpool's sporting director after six years at the helm. He was replaced by Julian Ward.

But there was another, slightly less publicised departure that affected Liverpool in the injury department, with the staff member in question yet to be replaced, as per reports.

Liverpool without key medical staff member

Club doctor Jim Moxon left Liverpool on the eve of the 2022/23 season. He joined the club in the summer of 2020, and provided vital expertise in the Reds' medical department.

As per This is Anfield, the club tweaked their medical department earlier in the summer, with the creation of a new role, and new heads of osteopathy and medicine/fitness put in place.

But The Athletic claim that, although an appointment is close, Liverpool are yet to find a replacement for Moxon as club doctor.

The same source says that the Reds were surprised by Moxon's decision to step down from the role, and sporting director Ward was asked to compile a list of targets, via a recruitment agency.

They add that an external appointment is indeed near to being finalised - but Klopp's side have been without a club doctor for nearly three months, even with other medical personnel filling in on matchday.

With Liverpool having suffered a number of injury problems, a new - or existing - face being recruited to the medical team would surely provide a boost ahead of what will be a punishing post-World Cup schedule.
