John Harrison, a University of Cambridge Astronomy PhD graduate and data specialist recently comprised a study to find the best keeper from the top 6 clubs in the Premier League, in statistical terms. His study found Liverpool’s Alisson to be that keeper.

Using a formula which took into account ‘general stopping, 1v1 stopping, shot handling, cross claiming, through-ball sweeping, general passing and pressurised passing,’ he then would calculate the total number of goals saved through the season.

The results found that “Alisson was by far the goalkeeper of the year statistically!” with him saving 18.94 goals through the 2021/22 Premier League campaign. The next best being Hugo Lloris, with the Spurs man only saving 7.34 goals.

Harrison went on to state that not only was Alisson “above average in every aspect of goalkeeping, he often was the outright best goalkeeper in each individual aspect,” with his 18.94 goals saved being the difference between challenging for the title and only challenging for the top four.

Harrison’s study highlights what a lot of us already knew in statistical terms. That Alisson is one of the best keepers in the world, if not the best.

Since the Brazilian’s arrival to Merseyside in 2018, the player has taken the league by storm, winning everything possible in the process. A back 5 made up of Van Dijk, Matip, Alexander-Arnold, Robertson and himself has created the foundations for an all-time great Premier League side.

We certainly won’t be seeing the 29 year-old keeper leaving Anfield any time soon, with the Reds most definitely keen on holding onto the player who has saved them so many goals.

We could be witnessing a future Hall of Famer in that Liverpool number 1 shirt for years to come…
