Lionel Messi set to make sensational joint transfer this summer

Barcelona and Inter Miami could team up to secure Lionel Messi's services this summer.

Lionel Messi could be set for a sensational joint transfer in the summer, reports claim.

Messi, who scored the goal that clinched the Ligue One title for Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to leave the club once his contract at the Parc des Princes on 30 June.

He has heavily linked with both Barcelona and Inter Miami, while there is talk of an astronomical offer from Saudi Arabia side Al Hilal.

Messi will soon become a free agent but L'Equipe say that Barca and Inter have discussed a unique arrangement for the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner's services.

The deal would essentially be a buy-and-loan exchange. The scenario would see Messi sign for David Beckham's MLS franchise but immediately be loaned out to his beloved Barcelona, where he has scored a staggering 672 goals.

The 35-year-old would then spend between six and 18 months back in Catalonia and ensure he is playing at the highest level going into the 2024 Copa America - which could well be his final tournament for Argentina.

If the move is successful and goes to plan, Messi would then finish up with the Florida outfit and take the MLS to the next level in the final days of his career.

For a while now Barca have been exploring how to sign Messi given the financial restrictions La Liga has placed on them but appear to be struggling, even with both Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets moving on this summer.

The joint-deal would be a loophole of sorts and allow Barca to get around the finances required to bring Messi home.

Manager Xavi Hernandez, who played with Messi for many glorious years, has made no secret of his desire to manage the Argentine ace.

"I'm in no doubt that if Messi were to return, he would help us in what we are wanting to achieve with our football," Xavi told SPORT.

"I am in no doubt and I've told this to the president. He continues to be a determined footballer, he has the hunger still.

"He's still a winner, he's a leader and he's different. At Barcelona, we've not have the same level since what we reached as a pinnacle in 2010.

"There's no doubt that he would still help us a lot - but in the end it all depends on him.

"We're going to talk to him and his representatives. I think Leo has the upper hand, there is no doubt."
