Canelo Alvarez has reacted to Lionel Messi and Argentina winning the World Cup following feud

Canelo Alvarez has reacted to Lionel Messi and Argentina winning the World Cup following feud

Canelo Alvarez threatened Lionel Messi for allegedly disrespecting the Mexico flag before apologising for the misunderstanding.

Boxer Canelo Alvarez has congratulated Argentina for winning the World Cup a few weeks after beefing Lionel Messi.

Alvarez threatened seven-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi following Argentina's 2-0 win over his beloved Mexico on 26 November.

Argentina bounced back from their first defeat in 36 games at the hands of Saudi Arabia, with Messi and Enzo Fernandez on target.

There were great scenes in the changing rooms afterwards, with Lionel Scaloni's side singing and dancing.

In the celebrations, Messi appeared to accidentally kick a green Mexico shirt across the floor while taking off his boots.

Canelo was duped by a fake Messi Instagram post and reacted on Twitter, writing: "Saw Messi cleaning the floor with our jersey and flag. He should ask God that I don't find him. Just like I respect Argentina, he has to respect Mexico!

"I'm not talking about the country as a whole, just about the bulls**t that Messi did."

Sergio Aguero, Messi's long-time best friend, leapt to Messi's defence and told him it was completely accidental and not to "look for problems or excuses".

Canelo didn't take that all too well and branded Aguero a "hypocrite b*****d", claiming he used to message him on social media.

Eventually Canelo did issue a public apology for his actions on social media. And having seen Argentina win a third World Cup thanks to a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win over France, he sent La Albiceleste a message on social media.

"Congratulations Argentina, they deserved it," the four-weight world champion wrote to his 2.4 million followers.

Naturally, it came as no surprise that plenty of the replies were Messi related. There was nothing to wind Canelo up in the post-match celebrations from the final, though Kylian Mbappe won't have been best pleased with Emiliano Martinez mocking him.

Despite scoring a World Cup final hat-trick - and converting his penalty past Martinez - Mbappe was on the losing side after Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni missed from 12 yards.

In the dressing room afterwards, Martinez asked for a "minute of silence" for Mbappe.
