Footage has emerged online showing Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe celebrating in each other's faces.

In a clip posted to Twitter, the pair can be seen fist-pumping in the other's direction after scoring in the World Cup final.

After Mbappe's equaliser, he clearly looked over at Messi and fist-pumped – but it was the Argentinian who got the last laugh, of course.

Argentina went on to win the final in Qatar, courtesy of a tense penalty shootout after the game itself ended 3-3 in regular time.

Emiliano Martinez's goalkeeping heroics followed by Gonzalo Montiel's cool deciding spot kick meant Argentina ended their 36-year drought for World Cup silverware.

As for Messi, it cemented his legacy as perhaps the greatest footballer to ever grace the earth.

But it seems eagle-eyed fans have spotted a slight flashpoint during the game which shows just how competitive the footballing megastar really is.

In a video filmed by someone inside the stadium, Messi can be seen looking in Mbappe's directing and fist-pumping just after Argentina went 2-0 up.

As the clip progresses, it shows France drawing level to make it 2-2 in the dying embers of the match.

But as the two teams returned to their halves for the restart, Mbappe returned the favour and started fist-pumping in front of Messi, clearly locking eyes with his PSG teammate.

But, as we all now know, it was Messi who got the last laugh, lifting the trophy that has eluded him for so long throughout his decorated career.

The footage of the exchange has gone viral on social media with more and more users re-sharing it n the wake of Argentina's victory.

Once the dust had settled on a truly gripping World Cup final, football fans wasted no time in spitting out various memes which best reflected their thoughts on the game.

Unsurprisingly, many of them were focused on Messi and Mbappe.

The man himself was expected to retire from international football after this tournament in Qatar, but he has since shut down those whispers.

“No, I’m not going to retire from the national team,” he said.

“I want to keep playing as World Cup champions in the Argentina shirt.”
