Levi Colwill branded "disrespectful" for tweet sent after Chelsea's 4-1 hammering at hands of Man United

Levi Colwill branded "disrespectful" for tweet sent after Chelsea's 4-1 hammering at hands of Man United

Chelsea's on loan defender Levi Colwill has received backlash for a tweet sent not long after Chelsea were pumped by Manchester United.

Levi Colwill has caused a stir with a tweet he sent after Chelsea were battered 4-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

United secured a return to the Champions League next season after an emphatic win where Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford all found the net.

Joao Felix netted a late consolation for Chelsea, who are 12th in the league and face fourth-placed Newcastle United on the final day.

But defender Colwill, who has had an exceptional season on loan at Brighton, has received backlash for his social media activity on the night of the heavy defeat.

The 20-year-old played 16 times as the Seagulls finished sixth and qualified for the Europa League, following up an impressive campaign on loan at Huddersfield Town in 2021/22.

He's been with Chelsea since under nines and is still contracted to the club. Yet Colwill has drew ire from his own fans, who feel as though he was mocking their latest loss.

Brighton writer and podcaster Ryan Adset tweeted the centre-back, writing: "Hey mate, how’s your evening going?".

Colwill quote-tweeted and replied, "Brilliant!!!!!" as well as uploading a picture of him and teammate Billy Gilmour, who left Chelsea for Brighton in the summer.

But while there was likely no malice intended, plenty of Chelsea fans were left fuming as a result.

One wrote: "I think that’s a poor tweet from Levi Colwill. Disrespectful and unprofessional to the club that has nurtured him from a young age and helped him become the player that he is."

A second fumed: "That tweet from Levi Colwill is legitimately more disappointing than the result tonight,"

Another urged Colwill to take action, writing: "Levi you have until 11am sharp to delete this, that’s plenty of time to sober up mate. Or should I even call you that."

A fourth called for Chelsea to get rid, saying: "He doesn’t even have 1000 Premier League minutes to his name. Get rid of this guy now. He doesn’t deserve to play for Chelsea. Utter clown."

A fifth stated: "Bring him back and let him rot on the bench and we’ll see who’s laughing then."

A final user did not hold back, claiming: "This guy @levi_colwill is a bigger disgrace and embarrassment to Chelsea than any of the players on the pitch tonight."

Colwill, an England under 21 international, hasn't yet made a first-team appearance for Chelsea.

Asked about his future by The Athletic recently, he commented: "I don’t know what is going to happen [at Chelsea]. I’m still here until the end of the season. I just focus on that, we’ll see what happens.

"Brighton have done a lot for me. They put their trust in me when others didn’t."
