A member of Real Madrid's first-team squad has issued a strongly-worded statement after he read "several articles that damaged his reputation" amid rumours of a potential rift with Xabi Alonso.
One of the big talking points from Tuesday night's Champions League clash between Madrid and Kazak side FC Kairat was a rumour involving Alonso and Uruguay international Federico Valverde.
Speaking ahead of the match, Valverde admitted he was "not born to play right-back" after Spanish publication AS suggested Alonso had planned to use Valverde in the position with Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold out injured.
"I don't feel comfortable because there are many qualities I lack, like the ability to close down the defence," he added. "But I always try to give my best and show attitude. I've always made it clear that I'm available for whatever the coach needs."

Los Blancos knocked five goals past their opponents on Tuesday night, but speculation regarding Valverde only intensified both during and after the game, with Marca suggesting he refused to play at right-back.

In fact, the publication highlighted Valverde standing with his arms behind his back during a warm-up in the second half against Kairat while the rest of his teammates performed exercises.
After the full-time whistle, Los Blancos teammate Fran Garcia said: "I'm sure it bothers him" when asked about Valverde being an unused substitute.

"I have read several articles damaging my reputation," he wrote on X. "I know I’ve had bad games, I’m aware of it. I’m not hiding, and I face the criticism head-on. I’m truly sad. People can say many things about me, but under no circumstances can they say that I refuse to play.
"I have given everything and more for this club, I’ve played while fractured, injured, and I’ve never complained or asked for a break.
"I have a good relationship with the coach, which makes me feel confident enough to tell him which position I prefer on the field, but I always, always made it clear that I’m available to perform anywhere, on any trip, and in every game."

Valverde added: "I’ve left my heart and soul in this club and I will continue to do so, even if sometimes it’s not enough or I’m not playing as I’d like. I swear on my pride that I will never give up and will fight until the end, playing wherever I’m needed."
