Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has spoken out after his side were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool in the Champions League.

In one of the final fixtures of a dramatic week of Champions League action, Liverpool overcame their historic European rivals Madrid in a 2-0 victory at Anfield on Wednesday night.

Following what could potentially be a catastrophic loss for Madrid's season, reports began to emerge that the La Liga giants had already selected their ideal replacement for Ancelotti if results do not improve.

And now, the Italian manager has sent out a bold statement in the wake of the result, showing exactly where his head is during this rough spot of the season.

As it stands, Madrid sit 24th out of the 36 teams in the Champions League, four points behind the top eight clubs sides that automatically progress to the next round and just two points ahead of the 12 teams that will be eliminated after the group stage.

However, a close friend of Ancelotti and GdS contributor Alberto Cerrutti recently appeared on Cadena SER and revealed he had reached out to the Madrid boss for a comment on their current situation.

"You can tell them anything you want, but tell them that Real Madrid will be in the final in Munich", Ancelotti replied to Cerrutti’s message.

There are still dozens of matches to be played in the premier European competition before the May 2025 final in Munich, and yet Ancelotti remains confident that his side will be there despite their rocky start.

But it seems that higher-ups at the club are not quite so sure, as they have reportedly already selected a potential replacement for the 65-year-old if he cannot improve on recent results.

Who have Real Madrid picked to replace Ancelotti?

According to COPE journalist Roberto Morales, former Madrid boss Santiago Solari has been selected to make a spectacular return to the Bernabeu if Ancelotti is dismissed.

The ex-Madrid midfielder was spotted in the stands at Anfield on Wednesday, adding fuel to the rumours that he could be set to come back after his brief spell in charge during the 2018/19 season.

"Solari is the chosen option if things don't get back on track and there is a big setback in the coming months," Morales posted on X.

However, he added: "I don't see Ancelotti being dispensed with. His successes, the importance of his figure, should not open a debate to at least complete the season."
