Dani Olmo has been unveiled as a new Barcelona player, but there is one reason why he still cannot play for the club.

Olmo was officially announced as a Barcelona player on August 9, transferring to the La Liga giants from Bundesliga side Red Bull Leipzig for a reported fee of £51million.

Despite this, the Spaniard is yet to feature for his new club, having not been named for any of their three matches this season.

But what is the reason that Olmo is yet to play for Barcelona and when could he make his debut?

Although he has signed on as a Barcelona player and been announced as a new signing by the club, Olmo is yet to be registered by the Spanish side as they continue to struggle with financial restraints.

The club had hoped that they would be able to complete a deal in time to register their new player ahead of Saturday's league match against Athletic Club, but ultimately it didn't materialise.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, as it stands, Barcelona are working on exits for Clement Lenglet, Mikayil Faye and Vitor Roque.

Lenglet's transfer to Atletico Madrid appears to be the most imminent, however they are also considering selling former Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen, who has reportedly attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.

Completing any one of these deals would generate enough funs for Barcelona to register Olmo, who was a standout player for Euro 2024 winners Spain this summer.

"Wherever he plays, Olmo stands out for his individual talent and his ability to link up with his team-mates," Barcelona said in a statement announcing their new signing.

"He has a nose for goal as he showed in Euro 2024 and can score from inside and outside the penalty area."

After his transfer was official, the 26-year-old took to social media to thank his former club, where he won two German Cups after joining them in 2020.

"A young club, a young player. We grew up, won our first trophies and made history together," he said on X.

"Thank you RB Leipzig, you'll forever be in my heart."
