Kieran Trippier tried to make his Newcastle United teammates clap the fans after their shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Cambridge United - but they ignored him.

Trippier made his debut for the club on Saturday after sealing a £12.5 million move from reigning La Liga champions Atletico Madrid.

It was one to forget as the Magpies were dumped out of the FA Cup third round thanks to a Joe Ironside strike in the 56th minute.

Newcastle fielded a relatively strong XI and per Ciaran Kelly, Trippier urged them all to show their appreciation to the St James' Park crowd.

Instead, most of them took off down the tunnel leaving Trippier and just a few others to show their respect.

No specific players were named in the report but supporters in the replies have started to speculate over who the players who refused are.

Newcastle have made a habit of being eliminated from the third round of the FA Cup and it's the sixth time in 10 years they've been knocked out at this stage.

Manager Eddie Howe sent a warning to his players who bolted down the tunnel post-match and he was very disappointed with their conduct.

"We have a way of working and my personal opinion is that we should always appreciate the fans and thank them for coming and thank them for supporting the team," Howe explained.

"Sometimes, that's very difficult to do when you haven't had a positive result. Some players probably want to just immediately leave that situation, but we encourage them to recognise the supporters.

"Sometimes, that's the most important time to do it when the result hasn't been good so we have to stand up, take the criticism but still acknowledge the people who have paid big money to come and watch us.

"I never run from that moment. I don't think that's right."

Newcastle are currently 19th in the Premier League and have won one league game all season.

Trippier's arrival will be a boost, with the 31-year-old bringing experience and quality in defence.

He told reporters on Friday he's joined Newcastle as he 'loves a challenge' and has enjoyed working under Howe before.

The England international was signed by Burnley when Howe was manager in 2012.
