Karim Benzema on the verge of tears as he bids emotional farewell to Real Madrid

Karim Benzema will leave Los Blancos to continue his career elsewhere

Karim Benzema was holding back tears during his emotional farewell press conference after his decision to leave Real Madrid.

Earlier this week, it was confirmed that the Frenchman will depart Los Blancos after a trophy-laden time at the Bernabeu.

A statement from Madrid read: “Real Madrid CF and our captain Karim Benzema have agreed to end his brilliant and unforgettable period as a player for our club.

“Real Madrid wants to show its gratitude and all its affection for who is already one of our greatest legends.”

On Tuesday, Benzema’s farewell press conference took place and there wasn’t a dry eye inside the room.

When the striker’s highlights were shown on the screen, Benzema was holding back tears whilst the likes of Carlo Ancelotti, Dani Carvajal and Thibault Courtois watched on emotionally.

During his press conference, Benzema said: “It really hurts… it’s not easy, I really wanted to retire here but sometimes directions change.

“I’ll always be watching Madrid games and I will always support Real Madrid, the best club in the world.”

The Frenchman ended his farewell speech with: “As I said the first day, 1, 2, 3... Hala Madrid!”

On Benzema’s departure, Ancelotti said: “It was a surprise, he thought it through. His decision is part of a process for this club that has begun to make a transition, we have time to think about what we are going to do.”

After his exit was confirmed, the Ballon d’Or winner has been heavily linked with a big-money move to the Middle East.

It has been reported that Saudi Professional League club Al Ittihad are strong favourites to sign the 35-year-old.

Benzema joined Madrid back in 2009 aged just 21 and went on to become one of the most important players in the club’s recent history.

In total, Benzema won five European Cups, five Club World Cups, four European Super Cups, four Leagues, three Copas del Rey and four Spanish Super Cups during his time with Madrid.
