"He was sensational" - Jurgen Klopp says one Liverpool player was truly brilliant against Man City

Jurgen Klopp believes one Liverpool star was incredible during their win.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has lauded the performance of one Reds star during the side's 1-0 win over Man City on Sunday.

The Premier League clash saw Liverpool attempting to get back on track against a side that were yet to lose a domestic league match so far this season.

Pep Guardiola's side came to Anfield as heavy favourites, even though the hosts had not lost a league match at home since March 2021.

It was a high-octane encounter filled with notable moments. Phil Foden put City ahead early in the second half, but the goal was ruled out. VAR deemed that Erling Haaland had fouled Liverpool's Fabinho in the build-up.

The decision seemed to put a spring in the step of the hosts, and Mohamed Salah gave them the lead on 76 minutes with one of the individual goals of the season.

He used his body to turn past the final defender, Joao Cancelo, on the halfway line, latching on to an Alisson kick in the process. Salah then sprinted towards goal, slotting the ball beyond Ederson.

Liverpool had to deal with increased City pressure towards the end, but held on to record a crucial victory.

After the match, Klopp revealed the player he believed was "sensational" throughout the 90 minutes at Anfield.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the German boss lauded the performance of Joe Gomez: "It's just great for Joey that he can show what a player he is.

"He was sensational, a mature performance together with Virgil and the two full-backs."

Gomez replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back in last weekend's 3-2 defeat at Arsenal, before keeping the position for the 7-1 win over Rangers in midweek.

However, due to injuries suffered by Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate, the former Charlton defender was moved to centre-back - a position he has been more regularly used at Liverpool.

He formed a partnership with right-back James Milner in defence, with the pairing, alongside fellow defenders Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson, a key reason behind Liverpool picking up three points.

In addition, Gomez received the Player of the Match award by Sky Sports.

Given his performance, it would be no surprise to see the 25-year-old keep his place for the upcoming games. A late surge for a spot in England's World Cup squad may well be a possibility too.
