Joe Gomez howler gifts Leeds United shock lead against Liverpool, the Reds have shot themselves in the foot AGAIN

Joe Gomez howler gifts Leeds United shock lead against Liverpool, the Reds have shot themselves in the foot AGAIN

Rodrigo put Leeds ahead after just four minutes.

A catastrophic error from Joe Gomez handed Leeds United a shock lead against Liverpool in their Premier League match at Anfield on Saturday.

Leeds boss Jesse Marsch was under huge pressure heading into the match, with his side without a win in their last eight league games.

But the Yorkshire club made the perfect start against the Reds, courtesy of a huge helping hand from England international Gomez.

Just four minutes into the match, Gomez collected the ball near the touchline and played a blind pass back to his goalkeeper Alisson.

But his pass was poorly directed, allowing Leeds forward Rodrigo a simple finish into an empty net with Alisson stranded.

It was yet another poor start to a Premier League match from Liverpool, who have now conceded the first goal in eight of their 12 league games this season.

Liverpool fans on social media were furious with Gomez after his early mistake.

"Get Gomez off," posted one fan on Twitter.

Another added: "You're a disgrace."

A third wrote: "This has just not happened."

While another posted: "One good game... he’s so inconsistent."

Thankfully for Gomez, Liverpool were able to equalise quickly.

Just 10 minutes after Rodrigo's opener, Mohamed Salah drew the home side level with his 11th goal of the season in all competitions.

It was also his seventh goal in just five appearances against Leeds.

Despite equalising, Liverpool continued to look vulnerable in defence as the half went on.

Leeds came close to retaking the lead when Brenden Aaronson struck the bar.

Alisson was then forced into a good save by Jack Harrison after a quick counter-attack from the visitors.

But Liverpool held out to reach the half-time interval without conceding for a second time.

Victory for Jurgen Klopp's side would move them up to seventh in the Premier League, while a win would take Leeds out of the relegation places and up to 14th.
