Jamie Carragher has had his say on who Liverpool should sign in the summer transfer window after an underwhelming season for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

In what has been a largely disappointing, inconsistent campaign for the Reds, Klopp’s men are in real danger of not qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2016.

The 2020 Premier League champions will require fierce rivals Manchester United to lose both of their remaining league fixtures to have any hope of salvaging a place in European club football’s elite competition next season.

One major criticism levelled at Liverpool this term has been their lack of squad depth, a particular issue given the club have been competing on four different fronts, with the added problem of a World Cup taking place halfway through the season.

The primary area to strengthen for Klopp will be the midfield, with the likes of James Milner, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Naby Keita all likely to leave on a free, while the loan deal for Arthur Melo, which has been nothing short of a disaster, will not be extended.

Now Carragher, who made over 500 appearances for Liverpool over a 17-year career, has had his say on who he thinks Liverpool should sign in the hope of mounting a serious title challenge next season.

With the likelihood of Jude Bellingham coming to Merseyside now incredibly slim, Carragher has urged his former club to bring in two players with proven Premier League pedigree: Chelsea and England midfielder Mason Mount and Brighton’s World Cup winner, Alexis Mac Allister.

Interest in Mount has grown in recent weeks, with both Arsenal and Manchester United keeping an eye on the 24-year-old. The latter, it is believed, are readying a £55 million bid for Mount’s services.

Similarly, Mac Allister isn’t likely to come cheap. The playmaker has had a memorable season notching 12 goals as Brighton secured European football for the first time in their history, while also emerging as one of Argentina’s stars as they claimed football’s biggest prize in Qatar.

Speaking to The Anfield Wrap, Carragher said: “Mason Mount is a funny one, in that people always seem a little bit down on him for whatever reason. I’ve never got it, I’m a huge fan.

“He’s a Champions League winner. I really like him. He’s got energy to press, he’d provide a greater goal threat from midfield than we have from Jordan [Henderson] in that position right now.

“Every top manager who’s been at Chelsea has picked him. He plays for England and I think the club have also got to be thinking about that homegrown situation.”

However, the popular pundit also noted that Liverpool need to improve defensively if they are to stand any chance of competing for trophies again.

“If we brought Mac Allister and Mason Mount in, I’d be delighted with that. I definitely want us to bring a defensive midfield player in as well, because Mount and Mac Allister are more offensive midfield players,” Carragher added.

“I don’t think our problem is going forward, our problem is defensively. If we’re going get back to where we want to be, which is challenging Manchester City and challenging for big trophies, we’ve got to sort ourselves out defensively because that’s been the biggest problem this season.”
