Fans cannot believe Inter wasted the 'perfect chance' to eliminate Barcelona from the Champions League

Fans cannot believe Inter wasted the 'perfect chance' to eliminate Barcelona from the Champions League

The game was 3-3 at this exact moment.

Inter Milan midfielder Kristjan Asllani had the perfect opportunity to eliminate Barcelona from the Champions League but messed it up in dramatic fashion.

The two sides played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night with Barcelona knowing they'd be eliminated from the competition with a defeat.

A draw gives them a slim chance of qualification for the last 16, but it Asllani could've put those hopes to bed in the fourth minute of injury time.

Lautaro Martinez ran at the Blaugrana's defence and threaded a ball through to Asslani. The 20-year-old took it in his stride, coming face-to-face with Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

An Inter player made a supporting run into the box, giving Asslani the perfect opportunity to square it. Instead, he continued running before attempting to rifle his shot past ter Stegen.

The Germany international made himself big and blocked the shot to preserve a point.

Asslani is currently on loan at Inter from Empoli and may have missed the biggest chance of his young career so far.

Fans on social media have reacted to the incident and they're still stunned.

One person said: "How did he get this so wrong?"

Another put: "Everything about this was so poor.

A third tweeted: "I don't even support Inter but I'm angry watching this."

While someone added: "My guy wanted to be the superstar."

Barcelona took the lead in the first half through Ousmane Dembele but were pegged back in bizarre circumstances.

Alessandro Bastoni whipped in an aimless ball which Gerard Pique assured wouldn't amount to anything.

The rest of Barcelona's defensive line stepped up, but Nicolo Barella timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap.

He turned home the equaliser and Martinez put the away side ahead just after the hour mark.

Robert Lewandowski brought the Catalan giants level when his deflected effort squeezed past Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana. Everything went off the rails from here.

Inter countered in the dying embers, with Robin Gosens converting a Martinez cutback. Barcelona were down and out, or so it seemed.

Lewandowski popped up with his second of the game in the 92nd minute to make it 3-3 and give Xavi's side hope going into the final two matchdays.

Elsewhere in Group C, Bayern Munich ran out 4-2 winners over Viktoria Plzen.
