Gary Neville has expressed his concern over a reported Newcastle United transfer rumour, saying it would 'scare him to death'.

Newcastle have spent wisely since their Saudi Arabia-backed takeover, recruiting experienced Premier League players in the shape of Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier.

The club have also splashed the cash on players like Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon, who was snapped up from Everton.

But as the Magpies close in on Champions League qualification, they're being linked with superstar talents who could command hefty price tags and contracts.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been sensationally linked with a move to St. James Park as his future with Al Nassr remains the subject of intense transfer speculation.

Not to mention Paris Saint-Germain forward Neymar, who is the latest player to be linked with a mega move to the North East outfit.

The 31-year-old is also doing the rounds in the transfer rumour mills, with the Brazilian thought to be exploring his options ahead of a summer switch after PSG ultras stormed his house.

With their financial backing, Newcastle could be an option - but the thought of Neymar plying his trade at the Premier League side has concerned Neville, who claims Eddie Howe would have a 'circus' on his hands.

"That would scare me to death, that sort of signing," the former Manchester United defender said on his podcast.

"Neymar is a sensational player but I think Eddie Howe all of a sudden would sort of have a circus - Eddie Howe doesn't need a circus up here.

"You think about what Newcastle are at this moment in time, they're building, they've got foundations."

Neville added: "What you don't want to do is basically go and disrupt that. Fans are really behind the team they're behind the manager, there's a sort of a spirit building.

"They're going to need to do it at some point, go for those big name signings, and they're going to need to make that jump and Eddie's going to need to be brave at a point and say 'yeah let's go for it'."

Do you agree with his take on Neymar at Newcastle? Let us know.
