Get very, very excited, lads. At the time of writing, there are exactly 128 days to the 2018 World Cup gets underway and the excitement surrounding the showpiece that occurs every four years is very much building.

But if you're already chomping at the bit now, your anticipation will only continue to heighten when EA Sports add the World Cup 2018 mode to FIFA 18.

The Best FIFA XI of all time:

In terms of world football tournaments, EA have often switched between bringing out standalone games to mark the occasion, and bringing in a free extension for players to get their hands (controllers) on.

For instance, World Cup 98, the 2002 World Cup and 2006 World Cup saw new games released, but for the last World Cup, EA created the add-on as a free update that featured all the players, kits and details for the 32 nations in the Brazil-hosted event.

According to Goal, the 2018 World Cup mode is set to be brought out in the coming weeks and it will be available on all the leading consoles such as Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Microsoft Windows - with no word on whether PS3 and Xbox 360, the slightly older consoles, will get the download just yet.

The opening game of the tournament isn't until the 14th June but it's likely that EA will give players a fair amount of time to utilise the mode, so it seems a spring release is on the cards.

In fact, Spanish commentator Manolo Lama told Radio COPE that he was required to do extra audio work for the game and predicted a February or March release.

"I have to record it for FIFA World Cup in December, I think it will be out in February or March," he said, with EA Sports Spain's head of marketing Daniel Montes present at the interview and apparently "frustrated" at Lama letting slip.

We're still in the dark regarding the key details of the game, and the release date could change of course, but it's all extremely exciting.
