University In Uruguay Suspends Classes During World Cup Matches

The students probably wouldn't be turning up anyway so they might as well let them watch the World Cup.

The 2006 World Cup was both the best and worst thing ever as it happened to coincide with doing my A levels. For students at one university in Uruguay life as a student has just become a bit more bearable.

The World Cup being on during my A levels meant that I had something to distract me from everything but that also meant that I never really did any work and prefered to just watch football.

It'll come as a surprise to none of you to find out that I ended up with C, D, E as my results. Not that the World Cup being on is actually to blame for that but sure we can blame it.

But the only thing that could be worse than A-levels being on at the same time as the World Cup is trying to study at university, sat in lectures, when the games are being played.

Fortunately for students at one university in Uruguay that won't be an issue.

As per Mexican website Sopitas, the Catholic University of Uruguay are set to suspend classes during the tournament in Russia.

In his letter to announce the decision the vice chancellor of the university wrote, "Sport in general and especially soccer , is an element that defines us as Uruguayans. It has the virtue of creating a common sense of unity that is rare in our days.

"One of the main missions of the university student is to be attentive to the reality that surrounds us. From a critical and academic spirit but also immersed in it, vibrating and participating with society."

It's not all good news for the students though as the letter did say that the classes being suspended will have to be taken at another time.

Uruguay kick off their World Cup campaign against Egypt next Friday and fortunately for them are unlikely to have to face Mo Salah with the Liverpool forward still fighting for his fitness.

They then face Saudi Arabia before rounding off Group A against Russia and will expect to progress from the group stages.

In the last two World Cups they have stolen the headlines because of Luis Suarez' actions, against Ghana and Uruguay, and they'll be hoping for more positive stories this time.
