He was baffled...

Manchester United travelled to the Stadium of Light to take on bottom club Sunderland today and going into the game, fans were perplexed by one particular decision from Jose Mourinho.

With the likes of Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling and David De Gea not in the starting XI and Michael Carrick on the bench, Jose Mourinho needed a new skipper for the game and the obvious choice would have been Zlatan Ibrahimovic, wouldn't it?

Except for Mourinho had other ideas and Marouane Fellaini, who has been booed by his own supporters at times this season, was given the armband.

Jamie Redknapp was informed of the decision to give the Belgian the captaincy when providing punditry on Sky Sports and his reaction was utterly brilliant:

The facial expressions of both Phil Neville and Jamie Redknapp say absolutely everything.

Fellaini doesn't exactly scream 'captain material' does he?

Plenty of fans on Twitter were equally as baffled by the news that Fellaini was handed the armband for the game:

A Fellaini-captained United are leading at half-time though, with Ibrahimovic's well-hit strike putting United in the lead in the 30th minute.

Sebastian Larsson was sent off for struggling Sunderland, with his challenge on Ander Herrera deemed to be worthy of a red card by referee Craig Pawson.
