Dani Osvaldo Says He Quit Football For 'Beers And Barbecue'

Fair play.

Well-travelled striker Dani Osvaldo has revealed that he called time on his playing career because of his love for eating and drinking.

The Argentine-born Italian turned out for a total of 12 clubs in his career, including seven Italian sides. He had a short and unsuccessful spell in the Premier League with Southampton under Mauricio Pochettino.

However his only real moment of quality in a Saints shirt following his reported £12.8 million move was the stunning solo goal he scored against Manchester City in a 1-1 draw in 2013.

He was also fined £40,000 and hit with a three-match ban for his role in a touchline scrap against Newcastle, as well as being suspended for two weeks for a fight with teammate Jose Fonte in the same season.

The 31-year old's last club were Boca Juniors, in what was his second spell with the Argentine giants, having been on loan previously.

But controversy, which has been the story of his career, ensued yet again and his stint there lasted a matter of months, with the former Roma striker hanging up his boots, rather prematurely, in August 2016.

And as per the man himself, he called it quits because he prefers beer and barbecue to money.

Speaking to La Gazzetta dello Sport, he said:

"I decided to quit at Boca, there was too much gossip. I couldn't go out, I was afraid of people. I couldn't do it anymore. I had offers from China and clubs in the Champions League, but I was detached."

"I was beginning to hate what I had always loved. Football deserves respect, and I prefer asado [Argentinian barbecue] and beer to money."

Fair play to the bloke, each to their own.

Osvaldo's best years came in his time at Espanyol and Roma. With the former, he scored 21 times in 46 games, before returning to Serie A with the Giallorossi and scoring 30 times in 48 appearances across two seasons.

We hope he's enjoying his beer and barbecue...
