Wrexham released Liverpool player's brother during Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's first season

Wrexham didn't fancy keeping him on.

Wrexham released the brother of a Liverpool star just months after Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their takeover.

Ever since Hollywood duo Reynolds and McElhenney completed their takeover of Wrexham in early 2021, the trajectory of the Welsh club has been firmly upwards.

Last weekend Phil Parkinson's side secured promotion to League One after a 19-year absence, just a year after winning the National League and returning to the Football League.

The club's rise has been meteoric, but not everyone at the club was invited along for the ride.

Reynolds and McElhenney completed their takeover midway through the 2020-21 season, and at the end of that campaign they released the brother of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Centre-back Fiacre Kelleher is currently involved in a relegation scrap with League Two Colchester United, while his brother is trying to help Liverpool win the Premier League.

Colchester are currently 22nd in the League Two table, four points above the drop zone.

The 28-year-old spent the 2020/21 campaign with Wrexham, making 42 appearances for the then National League side.

However, Wrexham decided against extending the former Celtic man's one year contract, so he joined Bradford City as a free agent.

He spent last season on loan at Solihull Moors before joining Colchester last summer, where he has made just 10 appearances this season after tearing a thigh muscle.

Fiacre has now returned to action and could play a part in helping Colchester stay in the Football League.

While he has been battling injury and the threat of relegation, younger brother Caoimhin has played an unexpected role in Liverpool's title challenge.

The Irish goalkeeper deputised for the injured Alisson Becker for two months, making 10 Premier League appearances.

The 25-year-old has also started all but one of Liverpool's Europa League games plus all six EFL Cup matches on the way to winning the Wembley final.
