Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has suffered a concerning injury during the Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool.

On Wednesday night, Premier League leaders Liverpool travel to London to face Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.

Bentancur was named in the starting lineup for the home side shortly returning from a seven-match ban handed to him for in November for using a racial slur about team-mate Son Heung-min on television.

However, the midfielder was taken off early in the match after suffering a worrying injury that forced Sky Sports cameras to cut away.

In the 15th minute of the match, Bentancur was taken off of the pitch on a stretcher due to the injury he sustained just minutes earlier.

The injury appeared to happen as the midfielder hit the ground after heading the ball once it came into Liverpool's box from a corner.

Details of the exact injury are not yet known, but Bentancur required treatment on the pitch for nearly ten minutes before being taken off on the stretcher to applause from the home crowd.

The Uruguayan was replaced by Brennan Johnson.

Posting on X to confirm the change, Tottenham's official account wrote: "We're all with you, Lolo."

Sky Sports presenter Mark Chapman confirmed at half-time that Bentancur was still being adressed by doctors in the Tottenham changing room.

Chapman said: "The latest we have on Bentancur after that awful looking injury in the first half is that when he was stretchered off the doctors accompanied him to the dressing room and he is still in there with the doctors.

"That is the only update that we have.”

Tottenham also provided an update at half-time, confirming that Bentancur was conscious and being taken to hospital for assessment.

The official club account wrote: "We can confirm Rodrigo is conscious, talking and will go to hospital for further checks."

The clash with Liverpool was only Bentancur's third match since returning from the seven-match ban handed to him in November for the racist remark about Son.

Tottenham appealed the decision, , but that was rejected and Bentancur was forced to miss seven matches while paying a fine of £100,000

The 27-year-old also recently served a Premier League suspension during the match against Newcastle United for yellow card accumulation.
