Jose Mourinho could not resist a dig at former club Spurs as he made his Euro 2024 predictions.

Mourinho has just signed a two-year deal to return to management with Turkish giants Fenerbahce, taking his 11th coaching job.

The 61-year-old has joked that he wants any players at the upcoming Euros to exit the tournament early so they will return to pre-season training early.

But before then he will be watching the competition with plenty of anticipation and has already been giving his thoughts on the showpiece.

Mourinho is backing England captain Harry Kane to finish as Golden Boot winner, branding him as a "fantastic, complete player".

Kane has just come off the back of a record-breaking 44-goal season in his debut campaign with Bayern Munich.

He was unable to finally win a trophy as Bayer Leverkusen stormed the Bundesliga, with Mourinho claiming the only thing Kane is missing is a piece of silverware.

And having managed him at Spurs, he couldn't help but aim a dig at his former club by sacking him before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City in 2021.

“Kane has scored goals for Tottenham, England, and I had no doubts that he would score goals for Bayern,” Mourinho said.

“Harry is a fantastic, complete player who scores goals from all over the pitch but isn’t selfish – he assists, drops deep, builds play, presses, defends. The only thing he is missing is to win a trophy.

"He was my player at Tottenham, and I was going to win one with him, but I was sacked six days before the final.”

Mourinho has regularly been linked with the Portugal national team job and there has been a suggestion that his Fenerbahce deal contains a clause which allows him to take that position.

The team are in fine form under Roberto Martinez, however, and Mourinho believes they have the best squad they have ever had.

Mourinho added: "I don’t want to be disrespectful about previous generations that we had, but in terms of squad depth and quality, we are probably now the best we have ever been and Portugal can go on to win it.

“It’s about having confidence, self-belief that they can beat anyone. I don’t want to say Portugal are the best team, but Spain, France, England, Germany are not better.

“The best problem for a coach is having to choose who to play, because there are two great right-backs, two great left-backs, two great positional midfielders – and I say two only because there is a 23-man squad but there are more."

Jose Mourinho was speaking as part of his role as global ambassador for Topps and their UEFA EURO 2024 Match Attax and stickers collections. Collectibles are available now from Topps.com and all good retailers.
