League Two side Accrington Stanley gave Liverpool a tougher game than Spurs, according to Jamie Carragher, who brutally dismantled Ange Postecoglou's side following their Carabao Cup semi-final defeat.

Liverpool will face Newcastle United on March 16 after goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai and Virgil van Dijk sealed their place in the Carabao Cup final.

It was a superb display from the Premier League leaders, who will hoping to secure their first silverware of the season when they come up against Eddie Howe's men at Wembley next month.

On the other hand, Spurs failed to register a single shot on target in the match.

Speaking in the Sky Sports studio after the full-time whistle, pundit Jamie Carragher gave his ruthless assessment of the North London club as he questioned their performances beyond Thursday's game at Anfield.

"It was never in doubt before the game. It's Tottenham," he began.

"When do Tottenham ever win a big game? When do Tottenham ever go anywhere and surprise you and win against the odds?

"The odds were massively in favour of Liverpool. They are at home at Anfield, they are the best team in the country and possibly in Europe right now but it's not just this Spurs team. They never shock you and do something out of the ordinary."

"I am trying to think of the last big game they won and I would probably have to go back to that Ajax game in the Champions League semi-final. I was in the stadium that night and they were very lucky. They got battered for most of the game."

Carragher added: "Whenever they go into a big game as a football club, nobody ever believes they are going to win. And that's not me as a Liverpool fan. Those Tottenham fans there tonight, not one of them will have believed they'd go and play at Wembley."

Later on in the night, Carragher said League Two side Accrington Stanley produced a better performance when they took on Liverpool in the FA Cup third round last month.

“I am not saying this to make a headline," the former Liverpool defender insisted. "I think Accrington Stanley... Liverpool didn't play their best team, but they gave more trouble to Liverpool than Tottenham tonight.”

The former England international would also give his take on Ange Postecoglou's uncertain position.

"They’ve lost 20 in their last 45 games. That’s an awful lot," he said. "Going back to that Chelsea game at home from last season, since then their record is horrendous.

"It’s not just a case of injuries right now, which I do sympathise with and playing 18 year olds, I’d like to see him given till the end of the season, but I think we’ve got to be careful talking about the injuries of the last 2/3 months, this form has been a problem since last season."
