Rafael Benitez has already made his feelings clear on Anthony Martial after becoming former Man Utd player's new boss

Rafael Benitez is set to take charge of AEK Athens.

Rafael Benitez has already made his feelings clear on Anthony Martial as he is set to become the star forward's new boss.

Benitez has been out of management since his Celta Vigo departure in March 2024.

The veteran manager had managed the likes of Liverpool, Newcastle United and Everton before returning to Spain.

But he is set to return to the dugout as reports claim he is on the verge of being appointed at AEK Athens.

According to Spanish outlet Marca, Benitez has reached an agreement with AEK to become their new manager, replacing Matias Almeyda, who was relieved of his duties earlier this month.

It comes after AEK's sporting director Javier Ribalta recently met with the Champions League-winning gaffer to present the Greek club's project for next season.

Once the deal is finalised, Benitez will manage former Manchester United man Martial, who joined AEK last September.

The Frenchman penned a three-year deal as he ended his association with Man United.

And he's enjoyed a prolific campaign in Greece, having scored nine goals in 20 games across all competitions this season.

He is set to be an integral player under the Spaniard, who has already made his feelings known about the player.

When he was in charge of Everton, the 65-year-old tried to sign Martial from Man United.

Benitez had been attracted by the idea of luring him to Goodison Park in the summer 2021, clearly showing he rates the 29-year-old.

He will finally work with Martial as he closes in on landing the AEK job.

Martial has flourished in Greece following a difficult spell at Man United, where he scored just two goals in 19 matches in the 2023/24 season.

He also found it tough at Sevilla during his loan spell, scoring just one goal in 12 matches.

But, as mentioned, he has resurrected his career with AEK, having bagged nine goals since his move.
