Paris Saint-Germain players will receive an unprecedented reward after retaining their Champions League crown.

The holders came up against Premier League winners Arsenal at the Puskas Arena in Budapest on Saturday, a year after thrashing Inter Milan 5-0 to secure their first European Cup title.

PSG had multiple failed attempts to become champions of Europe ever since huge investments came in from Qatar, having been eliminated in various knockout stages before experiencing defeat in the 2020 final against Bayern Munich.

They finally got over the line last season after a sensational run to the final, which included wins over three English sides in Liverpool, Aston Villa and Arsenal.

And the French side came out on top again on Saturday afternoon, beating Arsenal in a tense penalty shoot-out.

As a result of ending Arsenal's European dream, the PSG squad will receive a mammoth payout from the club's top brass.

According to L'Equipe, players have negotiated a huge bonus which would see each player pocket around €1 million.

The arrangement was also in place last year when PSG were finally crowned champions of Europe and was agreed upon by PSG's four-man leadership team consisting of Marquinhos, Achraf Hakimi, Ousmane Dembele and Vitinha at the start of the season.

On PSG's bonus structure, a source told L'Equipe that "real bonuses only come with titles; that's the culture of a great team".

There is also a bonus for winning Ligue 1, which is something of a formality for PSG given their domestic dominance and something they achieved earlier this month when they claimed a 14th league title.

In previous times players had lucrative Champions League winning bonuses in their contracts but now, under sporting director Luis Campos, it is seen as a collective where every player to have played their part is rewarded.

While Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Desire Doue and Joao Neves are some of the main stars for PSG, they will get the exact same bonus as Quentin Ndjantou, who played three times in the Champions League group stages but has been absent.

Last term, academy prospect Senny Mayulu scored in the final after coming on as a substitute and was entitled to the hefty bonus.

The last team to retain the Champions League was Real Madrid, who won row in a row in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Speaking ahead of the game, head coach Luis Enrique said: "I don’t think there’s any better motivation than winning the Champions League.

"We will see tomorrow who is better – we both won our respective leagues and I’m going to focus on what is positive for my team. So that we can show the best of ourselves.

“It’s a source of motivation for us. We have already gone down in the history books as one of the best teams in Europe. But that’s what we’re looking for. You never know when you’re going to be back in the Champions League final and you have to make the most of it.”
