Paul Scholes flipped the script when asked who was better out of him and Steven Gerrard

Paul Scholes gave a fascinating insight when asked who was better him or Steven Gerrard.

Scholes enjoyed a glittering career at Manchester United, winning an impressive 11 Premier League titles.

He will be remembered as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation that also includes Gerrard, who produced heroics at Liverpool.

Unlike Scholes, Gerrard never won the league title but had a legendary spell at his boyhood club, notably winning the Champions League.

Scholes and Gerrard are often compared against one another following their stellar careers for Man United and Liverpool respectively.

But the former Red Devils star insists his counterpart was a better player than him.

When asked who the better player was out of him and Gerrard, he replied: “I can answer that. Gerrard. Gerrard’s a great player."

Scholes added: “We’re different, we’re very different… he’s an athlete. I think he’s more of a match winner. But, he was playing in a team where he probably had to be.

"I was more part of a team. He was more individual I think. I wouldn’t be able to do what he did at Liverpool. Whether he could’ve done it at United, I don’t know. I don’t see why not. But I couldn’t have done what he did at Liverpool, no."

Interestingly, Wayne Rooney, who played with Scholes at Man United, made a similar claim to his ex-club colleague when comparing the two England greats.

He told Gary Neville on The Overlap - brought to you by Sky Bet: "I think Stevie could come to United and be a top, top player and almost do what Scholes could do, where I don't think Scholesy could go and do what Stevie did at Liverpool."

On Gerrard, Rooney called him an 'all-rounder', highlighting his ability to defend, pass and score goals.

"I think as an all-rounder, Stevie's the best out of them," he added. "I think he can defend, pass the ball, run, tackle, score goals, set pieces I think he's an all-rounder Stevie, he's the best from that point of view."
