Neal Maupay has called out Paul Scholes on social media after the former Manchester United midfielder branded him an "idiot" on a recent episode of The Overlap.

Scholes appeared as a guest on The Overlap Fan Debate alongside Jamie Carragher when the subject of Myles Lewis-Skelly's celebration against Manchester City cropped up in conversation.

Lewis-Skelly was criticised for imitating Erling Haaland's meditation celebration during this month's clash between City and Arsenal, just moments after he scored his first goal for the Gunners to make it 3-1.

A number of pundits have slammed the teenager for his actions, including Paul Scholes, who claimed the teenager was "disrespectful" before suggesting that Haaland will be motivated by the gesture.

Moments later, United supporter Adam McKola asked what the difference was between Lewis-Skelly's actions and when someone stole James Maddison's now-iconic darts celebration.

In response, Scholes said: "Neal Maupay? Yeah, but he's an idiot. He just takes the p*** anyway, doesn't he?"

After the clip went viral on social media, Maupay reshared the footage alongside a caption that read: "Surprised Paul Scholes can fit my name in his mouth alongside his daughter’s toes."

For context, Scholes admitted back in October 2021 that he'd had "better weekends" after a video of him chewing his daughter's toenails emerged.

Alicia Scholes shared the clip on her Instagram story, writing: "True love," as it appeared the former Manchester United and England midfielder was biting her toenails.

Maupay, who joined Everton from Brighton in 2022 for a reported £15 million, is currently on loan at Ligue 1 side Marseille in a deal that includes an obligation to buy.

The 28-year-old forward made headlines at the end of last year, shortly after Everton were beaten at home by Nottingham Forest as they sat three points above the Premier League relegation zone.

He reacted to the result by saying: "Whenever I'm having a bad day I just check the Everton score and smile."

In total, the Frenchman has scored just one goal in 32 appearances for the Toffees. He also spent last season on loan at former club Brentford.
