Alan Shearer delivered an X-rated response to Liverpool’s controversial late penalty against Newcastle United.

On Monday night, Liverpool welcomed the Magpies to Anfield as they looked to go three clear at the top of the Premier League.

Despite dominating the match, Jurgen Klopp’s men found it tough to break Newcastle down and Mohamed Salah missed a penalty in the first half.

During the second period, Liverpool found their shooting boots as goals from Curtis Jones, Cody Gakpo and a brace from Salah sealed a 4-2 win. Alexander Isak and Sven Botman were the scorers for the visitors.

Former Newcastle man Shearer was left fuming after referee Anthony Taylor awarded Liverpool a late penalty, which Salah dispatched to seal the victory.

Diogo Jota was played through by Alexis Mac Allister, the Portuguese rounded the goalkeeper before going down despite having an open goal in front of him.

The replays showed that the contact was minimal and Jota took an extra step before falling to the ground.

Taking to social media, Shearer wrote: “What a great dive that is,” followed by three laughing emojis.

The former striker then added: “F***ing embarrassing,” after fellow pundit Ian Wright wrote: “Would rather go down for a penalty than put the ball in an empty net! Seen it all!”

Speaking after the match about the penalty incident, Magpies boss Eddie Howe said: “We were up against it with two very soft penalties, the second one wasn’t a penalty at all. That doesn’t help when you come here.

“I haven’t spoken to him(Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka), I have just seen it myself and it looks like Jota takes two steps before he falls down.”

On the back of their vital win, Liverpool are now three points clear of second-placed Aston Villa at the summit of the Premier League table.
