Ruud van Nistelrooy has penned an open letter to Manchester United following his departure.

Van Nistelrooy took over Man United as interim boss after Erik ten Hag's dismissal at the end of last month.

He leaves off the back of the club's 3-0 victory over Leicester City in the Premier League, with Ruben Amorim set to take charge following the international break.

Van Nistelrooy has now released a statement thanking everyone at Man United following his short spell as manager.

"To everyone at Manchester United Football Club, in particular the backroom staff, the players and the fans," he wrote on social media.

"I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your incredible efforts and support.

"It has been a privilege and honour to represent the club as a player, coach and manager, and I will always cherish the memories we have shared together.

"Man United will always have a special place in my heart, and I hope there are many more glory days at Old Trafford very soon - not only because I want the club to do well, but because you all deserve it! "All the best and take care, Ruud."

Van Nistelrooy oversaw four games during his interim stint and has already been linked with a swift return to management.

He led the Red Devils against Leicester in the Carabao Cup, winning the cup tie 5-2 to secure a spot in the next round of the competition, before beating the Foxes again in a league clash.

The legendary Dutchman, who scored 150 goals during his prolific spell as a Man United player, also guided the club to victory over PAOK in the Europa League.

Man United also drew with Chelsea in the league under Van Nistelrooy's managerial tutelage.

The 48-year-old departs Old Trafford, with Amorim set to bring his own coaching staff with him to England.

The Portuguese head coach will begin his Man United reign at Ipswich Town on November 24.
