Roy Keane has revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson punished him when he was sent off for a horror challenge on Alf-Inge Haaland.

Back in 2001, Keane and Haaland came face-to-face during the Manchester derby between Manchester United and Manchester City.

After City player Haaland had nicked the ball away, Keane came crashing in with his studs up, catching Haaland’s leg with brute force.

Keane was sent off for the tackle and Haaland only made four more appearances after that challenge before retiring at the age of just 30.

Speaking on The Overlap, Keane admitted that he has no regrets over any of his red cards and also revealed how Ferguson punished him. You can watch the footage below.

Keane said: “I don’t regret any of them. People were annoying me and obviously, the one everyone remembers is the Haaland one.

“I got sent off a couple times at Newcastle, sent off at Blackburn, sent off once for Ireland, sent off against Chelsea in the Charity Shield. No regrets with them.”

He continued: “That was part of my game, if people are annoying then you have to put a marker down.

“I think the beauty of the times when I was sent off, I think the team ended up getting a result. The players always got me out of jail.

“If we got beat in a big game and you let the team down of course you’re feeling bad but if the team get a result, you’re feeling guilty but when they all walk in and they’re cheering, you’re going ‘thanks lads, that helps’.”

Keane went on to reveal the punishment he received when he received a red card.

He said: “Listen, you still get punished, you would still get fined.

“When I got sent off at United, I got two weeks’ wages.”
