Patrice Evra has called out a Manchester City player after Manchester United claimed a dominant 2-0 derby victory to move into the Premier League's top five.

Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu scored for the hosts in a thrilling attacking display as Michael Carrick began his interim spell in charge with a win.

United were the better side throughout at Old Trafford and were unfortunate to have three goals ruled out for tight offside calls.

For Manchester City, it was another blow to their title hopes as they slipped seven points behind league leaders Arsenal.

One City player who will have been particularly disappointed with the result was Rayan Cherki.

The Frenchman scored for his former club Lyon in last season's dramatic Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford.

Despite playing with 10 men, the Ligue 1 side took a two-goal lead in extra time before United struck three times in seven minutes to complete a remarkable comeback.

That night clearly stuck with Cherki and after joining City in the summer, he spoke openly about his desire to face United.

He said: “I didn't like it when Manchester United won the game against Lyon because I am a Lyonnais.

"Now I am waiting for the game [to] kill them. I just [wanted] to go to Manchester City."

Cherki missed the reverse fixture at the Etihad Stadium through injury and was introduced as a second-half substitute at Old Trafford.

United supporters had not forgotten his comments and, as he walked down the tunnel at full-time, he was met with jeers from the Stretford End.

A video of the moment circulated on Instagram, prompting a response from United legend Evra.

He wrote: "Amazing player but when you don't respect United that's what you get.

"FOREVRA RED."

It was a standout performance from Manchester United, one which former player and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said reminded him of his own time at the club.

Speaking on The Gary Neville podcast, he said: "That is one of the best performances you'll see in any era by a Manchester United team.

"We've been conditioned to believe you cannot play like Manchester United play,

"That's what I've been told for the last three, four, five years, 'move on, you can't play that way anymore'.

"I'm sorry, you can play that way in modern football, you've just watched 90 minutes of it, 90 minutes of exactly what I think this club plays like when it's actually at its very best."

The challenge for Carrick now will be to replicate that level over the final 16 games of the season as United push for Champions League qualification.

They return to action next Sunday with a trip to the Emirates to face league leaders Arsenal.

Meanwhile, City travel to Norway on Tuesday night to face Bodo/Glimt.
