Manchester United broke little-known Premier League rule during Hull loss

Manchester United broke Premier League kit rules during their 2-0 loss versus Hull City by failing to display the competition’s badge on both arms.

The Red Devils wore sponsor-less sleeves, meaning that, to comply with Premier League regulations, the competition’s badge must instead have been displayed on both arms.

The kits worn by Michael Carrick’s men did not follow those rules, which was initially spotted by eagle-eyed fans during the television broadcast on TNT Sports.

Manchester United, whose opening five Premier League fixtures are the most of any team to be televised, were defeated 2-0 by newly-promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium.

It is understood, according to an exclusive report on the offence by the Daily Mail, that the English top-flight’s badge will be displayed on both arms ahead of their next clash versus Ipswich Town.

The Red Devils lack a sleeve sponsor after their £20 million annual deal with DXC Technology, which dates back to 2022, expired prior to the current Premier League season.

Action has been taken against the club regarding its kit offence, but both the Premier League and Manchester United are yet to comment publicly on the issue. SPORTbible have contacted Manchester United Football Club for comment.

Manchester United issued ‘polite warning’ after failing to comply with kit rules versus Hull

The extent of the action taken against the Red Devils is a ‘polite warning’ issued to the club ahead of their next Premier League clash, where they intend to comply with regulations.

That game will take place at Old Trafford on Saturday, against another newly-promoted side in Ipswich, after failing to secure three points on the road at MKM.

Manchester United are believed to be actively searching for a sleeve sponsor, but will wear the Premier League badge on both sleeves in the meantime.

Michael Carrick’s men suffered a shock defeat in their opening game against Hull, falling two behind in 38 minutes and failing to strike back.

The statistics reflected a relatively even performance, with xG swaying 1.83 to 1.01 in favour of the Red Devils, as well as taking 21 shots to their opponent’s eight.

The Manchester club enjoyed 72% of possession, recorded well over double the passes made by their opposition, and forced Hull City shot-stopper Konstantinos Tzolakis into a Player of the Match-worthy performance. He made five total saves, three of which came from shots taken inside the box.

Despite this, Hull created three Opta-defined Big Chances to Manchester United’s two — a larger portion of clear-cut opportunities were enjoyed by the hosts.

Club captain Bruno Fernandes, who won the 2025-26 PFA Players’ Player of the Year award last night in Manchester, was outspoken after his side’s defeat.

He claimed: “Every away game we give too much of the ball to them. In the first 20 minutes, the goalkeeper was the one with the most touches.

“Same mistakes as we did last season, every away game… Too much time – I think we need to press a little bit more, we need to be a little bit more aggressive,” he continued.

Those comments were questioned by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, who described Fernandes’ words as “strange” while also ripping into the Red Devils’ performance.
