Manchester United have been handed a fine following their Premier League loss to Chelsea.

Ruben Amorim's side suffered a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge as the Reds' dismal campaign continued.

United thought they had gone ahead in the first half thanks to Harry Maguire's tidy finish, only for the effort to be ruled out due to offside by VAR.

The hosts struck the post through Reece James before half-time, and went ahead after the break through Marc Cucurella's header which ensured three points for Enzo Maresca's men.

The victory means Chelsea's quest for a top five finish and Champions League qualification remains in their hands heading into the final day of the Premier League season next weekend.

United meanwhile remain 16th in the top flight table, and all focus is now on next week's Europa League final in Bilbao against fellow strugglers Tottenham Hotspur, who sit 17th and lost 2-0 to Aston Villa at Villa Park last night.

The victors of next week's final will have still had a terrible season, but will not only have a trophy to show for their campaigns but also a place in next season's Champions League, the same as the those sides finishing in the top five of the Premier League.

United boss Amorim felt his side started the encounter in West London well but ultimately lacked aggression in the final third, as all focus now switches to next Wednesday's vital match in Spain against Spurs.

He said: "I think we started great, well, but in the final third we needed to be a bit more aggressive. We were there, we faced the game in the right way.

"It was a bit of bad luck today. Sometimes we want to press and to score a goal, but we lost a little bit of concentration."

Amorim continued: "It was different, but you never like when you lose the game. We were competitive, that was clear.

"We have to prepare for each competition, with five days, we can rest. We have to prepare [for the Europa League final], two days to recover and then two days to prepare."

Cole Palmer was booked for the hosts, but referee Chris Kavanagh brandished the yellow card to six United players in the game.

Casemiro, captain Bruno Fernandes, Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, Ayden Heaven and Manuel Ugarte all received a booking.

And in the process, United will be hit with a fine of £25,000 by the Football Association after having six or more players were booked.

A precedent was shown earlier this season when both Chelsea and Bournemouth were fined after picking up eight and six yellow cards each respectively.
