VAR took centre stage during Manchester United's win over Wolves on Monday night, but former referee Keith Hackett has since spotted another error that was made by the officials.

Raphael Varane's header was enough to steal all three points at Old Trafford in their opening game of the season, but their victory was far from convincing.

Wolves dominated almost every aspect of the game and should have had the chance to equalise from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time after Andre Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic inside the 18-yard-box.

However, after a VAR review, referee Simon Hopper waved play on, leaving Wolves manager Gary O'Neil up in arms on the sideline, who was subsequently shown a yellow card for his protests.

Those in charge of VAR on the evening have since been dropped from next weekend's Premier League fixtures, with the general manager of the PGMOL Jon Moss admitting they got it wrong on the night.

Moreover, it has been claimed the PGMOL chief Howard Webb also contacted members of the Wolves hierarchy after the game to apologise for the mistake.

However, ex referee Keith Hackett has pointed out another error that was made by officials during the contest.

In the midst of celebrating his goal, Varane ran over to supporters, entering the crowd to embrace supporters alongside Marcus Rashford. Although neither player was booked despite PGMOL rules.

Referring to the incident on Twitter, Hackett wrote: "Please tell me PGMOL under the charter why no yellow card was applied. Consistent application of law is so important."

Normally players are shown a yellow card for entering the crowd when celebrating a goal, but Varane and co escaped unpunished.

Admittedly, the incident is mild in comparison to the penalty decision, but it highlights the lack of consistency within the rules less than three days into the new season.

Hackett, who used to work for the PGMOL and has officiated at the European Championships before, also claimed that VAR's involvement, or lack of, in the penalty decision was a "catastrophic error".
