Man Utd have opened talks to sign in-form French left-back as Tyrell Malacia uncertainty continues

Man Utd have opened talks to sign in-form French left-back as Tyrell Malacia uncertainty continues

Manchester United are said to be 'in contact' over a summer move.

It appears Manchester United have a new transfer priority ahead of this summer's window, according to reports, as they plan to strengthen their options as left-back.

Last month, Erik ten Hag confirmed that Tyrell Malacia is unlikely to play again this season.

Malacia has not featured for the Premier League club since undergoing surgery on a knee injury last summer. In fact, the 24-year-old full-back hasn't been involved in a matchday squad since May 28, 2023.

United, however, have yet to officially comment on the Dutchman's progress, although Fabrizio Romano recently published an update on his "complicated" situation.

“I think Manchester United will make some clarity in the next weeks or months to clarify what's happening," Romano added.

As well as Malacia, United's other left-back option Luke Shaw has struggled with injuries this season, which has forced Ten Hag into playing Victor Lindelof out wide of late.

To try and solve their ongoing problems at left-back, United have identified a possible solution.

The club are said to be in talks with highly-rated defender Melvin Bard over a summer move, according to the Evening Standard.

Bard, who plays for Ligue 1 side Nice – a team that are also affiliated with INEOS – has notched two assists in 23 appearances for Francesco Farioli's side this campaign.

Having also played further up the pitch in a more attacking system, the 23-year-old is clearly seen as a viable option after impressing in France's top division this season.

He is also pushing for a place in France's Euros squad this summer.

“[A call-up to] the France squad would be the Holy Grail,” he told Nice-Matin. “It’s every footballer’s dream. You think about it, but you don’t focus on it. I work every day towards this objective.

"I am not in a hurry. I am having a good season and I will have to back it up, especially since there are some great players in the France squad. That pushes you to be better."

Bard, who has two years left on his current deal at Nice, is set to be one of several targets.

United want a forward capable of playing alongside Rasmus Hojlund, according to the above reports, as well as a centre-back and a midfielder.
