Manchester United are reportedly targeting Brazilian sensation Marcos Leonardo to help boost their attacking line.

The Red Devils have struggled for goals in recent weeks, having suffered back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Newcastle.

Erik ten Hag relied heavily on Marcus Rashford for goals last season, but the Englishman has netted just once so far this campaign.

Ramsus Hojlund, meanwhile, is yet to find the back of the net in the Premier League since making the £72 million switch from Atalanta over the summer.

As a result, United are considering other alternatives in the January transfer window, with Leonardo on their list, claim TeamTalk.

But who is the 20-year-old forward Jose Mourinho was desperate to sign?

Who is Marcos Leonardo?

Leonardo hasn't received the same global exposure of the likes of Neymar when he was playing for Santos, but the young Brazilian has been steadily building his brand at the Brazilian club since 2020.

The Brazil under 20 International has enjoyed a prolific campaign in the Brazil Serie A, having scored 13 goals and registered two assists in 24 appearances this season.

He is currently under contract at Santos until 2026, but has attracted interest from Europe's elite.

What has been said about him?

According to Total Italian Football, Roma manager Mourinho had his heart set on the forward in August, despite having an initial €12 million bid rejected by Santos.

The report adds that his "intelligence" sets him apart from the rest.

"It’s his intelligence and technicality that really sets him aside though," the publication reads.

"The starlet has great knowledge of what kind of run to make and when to do so, identifying space before many others can."

What is the latest?

Leonardo is also thought to be a target for Manchester United's Premier League rivals Newcastle, claim TeamTalk.

While it is thought that Santos would be willing to part ways with their prized asset for £20 million.
