England star admits he would be open to shock Man Utd transfer

England take on Greece and Finland in Nations League fixtures next week.

A current member of Lee Carsley's England squad admits he would be open to a surprise transfer to Manchester United.

Carsley named his latest Three Lions squad on Thursday for upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and Finland.

The interim manager has largely stuck with the same group that recorded victories over Republic of Ireland and Finland last month.

But there are some changes, with Dominic Solanke recalled after seven years and the pair of Kyle Walker and Jude Bellingham both returning.

One man who has retained his place in the squad is former Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes.

The 24-year-old has impressed since moving to Lille from United in search of first team football.

And given the performances of several of manager Erik ten Hag's current first team players this season, many fans would be in favour seeing Gomes back at Old Trafford.

Speaking to The Times ahead of England's Nations League fixtures, he has admitted that he would have to at least consider a proposal from United if one came his way.

He said: "I do sometimes think about where I would be now [if I stayed at United].

"I think it's normal to feel like that, but the jump and trajectory that I took, the places that I've been, what I've learnt from the different coaches along the way, the detail, effort and love they have put into my game, I don't think I would be where I am now without it.

"As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all.

"There'll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of it course it would be difficult to say no [to returning to United]."

Gomes did feature in the Premier League for the Red Devils, making five appearances between 2016 and 2020.

But he turned down the offer of a new contract at Old Trafford, and signed a five-year deal with Lille.

After a season on loan at Portuguese side Boavista, he broke into the Lille first team and has been directly involved in 18 goals since the start of the 2022/23 season.
