This would be a huge deal for United if they can pull it off.

Manchester United are reportedly working on a surprise deal to sign a current Bundesliga star.

United shopped in Germany over the summer, bringing in defenders Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich for a combined fee of over £60 million.

Erik ten Hag's side made a series of other signings, including Manuel Ugarte from PSG and wonderkid centre-back Leny Yoro from Lille.

But the signings didn't have a major impact in the early weeks of the season, with United having their worst start to a Premier League season since 1989.

A 2-1 win over Brentford followed last weekend, with De Ligt in particular praised for his performance.

Now, United and INEOS are already looking ahead to the upcoming transfer windows - and have reportedly identified their preferred star signing.

According to Sky Sports Germany's Florian Plettenburg, Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies has been added to the club's list of transfer targets.

The Canada international has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but Los Blancos instead pursued the signing of Kylian Mbappe for last summer.

Davies' contract at Bayern expires next summer - meaning United could open talks to sign him on a pre-contract in January - with reports claiming that talks over a new deal with the Bavarians are on hold currently.

He joined Bayern from Vancouver Whitecaps in 2018 and has made over 200 appearances for the club.

The 23-year-old was signed as a winger before being converted to left-back by then manager Niko Kovac amid an injury crisis in that position.

Ten Hag's side are in desperate need of a left-back amid Luke Shaw's ongoing injury issues.

Tyrell Malacia has also been out of action for over a year with a knee injury, and is still yet to return to competition.

Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot can play on the left side of defence but are naturally right-footed.
