Manchester United have been warned over Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations amid their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim.

Sporting announced on Tuesday that United had informed them they would pay Amorim's £8.3 million release clause.

But reports from Portuguese outlet A Bola claim that Sporting also want United to pay compensation for the 39-year-old's assistant coaches, as well as an additional sum to waive a 30-day notice period.

Amorim was in charge of Sporting's 3-1 win over Nacional, and remained non-committal over his future in his post-match press conference.

United's sacking of Erik ten Hag on Monday means they will have to pay a significant compensation fee to their now former manager, who signed a two-year contract in the summer.

Assistants Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake are still on the staff at Old Trafford - Van Nistelrooy will take charge of Wednesday's Carabao Cup fixture against Leicester - but the cost of the managerial change will be significant to United.

And while the release fee itself isn't seen as a 'big obstacle', as per The Athletic, the cost of compensation to Ten Hag and Amorim's arrival is said to 'push United close to the line on financial regulations', according to those with knowledge of the situation.

However, minority co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to have privately indicated 'a desire to test the limits and figure out a solution later'.

In their latest set of accounts published in September, it was announced that the club had lost £257.4 million over the past three seasons.

But the Manchester Evening News reported that the club were insistent they would not breach any Premier League financial regulations. Clubs are not penalised for their spending in certain areas, including infrastructure, women's football and academies.

In the immediate future, Van Nistelrooy appears set to take charge of United's Premier League clash against Chelsea on Sunday with Amorim's appointment still to be fully negotiated.
