Manchester United chiefs have agreed that 'over half of the squad are serious candidates for sale' in the next transfer windows, while six players have been deemed 'unsellable'.

It was suggested last month that Ruben Amorim would be tasked with 'maximising the untapped potential' of his squad.

A report from The Telegraph said Amorim would likely operate on a more modest budget compared to Erik ten Hag, who spent more than £600 million during his two-and-a-half year tenure.

United brought in Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro and Manuel Ugarte in the summer, which required a total spend of around £200 million.

It looked like United would be inactive in the January window but new information has emerged that suggests Amorim will be given the opportunity to rebuild, but it will require 'urgent' sales.

That's according to Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg, who suggests United chiefs have agreed that over half of the players in the squad are 'serious candidates' for sale in the winter or summer if good offers come in.

"Ruben Amorim is to be given the opportunity to make a rebuild, which will require urgent sales," he added.

Plettenberg goes on to name six players who are considered by the club as unsellable, including Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro and Andre Onana.

He also claims 'two or three' other unnamed key players are amongst those who are not for sale.

Who are United interested in?

In the meantime, the Reds are reportedly in 'advanced negotiations' to sign highly-rated full-back Diego Leon amid interest from a host of top European clubs.

The 17-year-old, who is widely regarded as one of South America's most promising talents, has become a first-team regular at Paraguayan Primera Division side Club Porteno since making his debut in August.

Earlier this week, Leon opened up on his future during an interview with Deportes Uno.

"I have huge expectations about playing in the 2025 Libertadores," he said. "I’ve read about Manchester United’s link with me, I don’t know anything. Everything is handled by my agent."

He added: "I spent four years preparing for this opportunity, you have to take advantage of it when it comes. Now I’m thinking about everything that happened this season. The night before the debut I couldn’t sleep because of the excitement."
