Osasuna manager defends Mason Greenwood over 'die' chants during Getafe debut

Osasuna manager defends Mason Greenwood over 'die' chants during Getafe debut

The Osasuna boss leapt to the defence of the 21-year-old.

Osasuna manager Jogoba Arrasate has defended Mason Greenwood after their fans chanted 'die' at the Manchester United loanee.

Greenwood made his Getafe debut on Sunday, coming on in the 77th minute to play for the first time since January 2022.

Red Devils winger Amad Diallo showed his support for the 21-year-old on social media, posting an Instagram story of Greenwood coming off the bench accompanied by two heart emojis. But not everyone was quite so encouraging.

Upon entering the field, Greenwood was greeted by a mixed reception. While he was loudly cheered by his new supporters, a group of Osasuna fans chanted: "Greenwood, die" at the Englishman.

According to The Athletic, La Liga’s official match observer heard the chants and a disciplinary process is set to follow.

Meanwhile, Osasuna head coach Arrasate has slammed his own fans for their taunts.

He told the publication: “The chants of ‘F**k Osasuna’ were very bad and the chants against Greenwood were very bad too.

“He is a player who, in the end, the justice system had its say.

“He is a very good player. But if we talk about chants, we should talk about all the chants, not just some.”

in October 2022, Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In February this year, the CPS dropped all criminal charges after “the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light”.

United's internal investigation of Greenwood then came to an end in August, with the club concluding that he would not play for them again.

Getafe are due to play Real Sociedad next in La Liga on September 24, when Greenwood could make his full debut for the Spanish side.
