A Manchester United youngster let go by Erik ten Hag in the summer delivered a stunning performance for his new team in the Champions League.

Man United offloaded several players during the summer transfer window as Ten Hag looked to trim his squad ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Scott McTominay, who has already made an impression in Italy, Mason Greenwood, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Willy Kambwala all departed Old Trafford.

Not to mention Alvaro Fernandez, who joined Benfica in a transfer worth £5 million.

Fernandez left Man United before making his debut for the senior team as he had loan spells at Preston North End and Granada.

The left-back also enjoyed a loan spell at Benfica before signing a permanent deal.

And his latest outing for the club saw him shine in his side's big 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.

His performance got Man United fans on social media talking as they bemoaned his transfer amid Luke Shaw's absence from the first-team.

One X user wrote: "Erik Ten Hag said he couldn't guarantee Alvaro Fernandez a clear pathway into the first team so he sent him on loan then sold him for £5m and then played Amrabat, Lindelof, AWB and this season Lisandro and Dalot at LB.. bad bad data."

A second said: "Alvaro Fernandez returning to Manchester United should be top 3 INEOS agenda next summer."

A third added: "Alvaro Fernandez doing really well at Benfica while United struggle on with two perma-injured left-backs and Diogo Dalot falling asleep at the wheel is not a great look."

A fourth commented: "Ten Hag not giving Alvaro Fernandez a chance when we had no left backs fit and Ole not giving Gomes a chance in 2019 when we desperately needed midfield creativity - two dumbest decisions."

Another bemoaned: "Selling Alvaro Fernandez was a massive mistake and I’m surprised we made it. The pathway couldn’t be clearer for him. Big opportunity missed."
